Released on January 23, 2015, Mortdecai, directed by David Koepp, is one of the many comedies released for 2015 and stars Johnny Depp as Charlie Mortdecai; Gwyneth Paltrow as Johanna Mortdecai; Ewan McGregor as Inspector Martland; Olivia Munn as Georgina Kramp; Paul Bettany as Jock Strapp; and Jeff Goldblum as Milton Krampf. In addition to starring in the film, Johnny Depp also narrates, allowing us to witness a wider range and a more personal perspective of his comedic entertainment. However, many critics have dished out a negative reception for this movie, and the facts soon after followed to match when the box office only made $4.2 million on its opening weekend. Taking into consideration that the movie had a $60 million dollar budget, it was a sure flop when the gross box office came out to $30.4 million, only half of the budget spent.
The movie revolves around the character Lord Charlie Mortdecai, an eccentric art dealer with a long curly mustache, that has left all too many business partners feeling cheated. After the theft of a painting, Inspector Martland seeks the services of Mortdecai. However, Mortdecai had married the Inspectors crush from college which had left the inspector with a slight vendetta against him. This leads Mortdecai accepts the job under the condition that he gets ten percent of the sales of the painting after they recover it. As the story progresses, they come to find out that the painting itself has a code on the back of it that leads to cache of Nazi gold, but they also find that there are a number of others who want their hands on the piece of art. As the search nears an end the plot takes a couple of sharp twists, some of which you won’t see coming. An adventure is born of the conflict and Lord Charlie Mortdecai must use wit, loyalty, and connections to pull off what would be his greatest feat yet.
The critics weren’t the only ones to state the movie a failure and the ratings seem unanimous. Almost all of the viewers state that it was one of the worst movies they’ve ever seen and disappointingly so as people expected more from a movie starring the famous Johnny Depp. Despite the fact that Mortdecai is an American comedy, many said that the movie was hard-pressed for good jokes and laughter. Viewers even stated that the comedy was “off’ and the jokes about Mortdecai’s mustache were over done and poorly played. For others the downfall of the movie came with the plot which got lost in a blur of a messy construction. Overall, the consensus was poor amongst all who saw the film and the signs all point to the same derivative, this movie probably won’t be on your top ten list.
